The blade is made from "high-speed steel" for exceptionally long edge retention, while the base metal is made from extremely soft iron. It has a sharp edge and is easy to sharpen. The blade bites into hardwoods and carves smoothly. The handle is made from high-grade natural cherry wood, and its rounded shape makes it easy to handle. If you are right-handed, you should push the back of the blade (the opposite side of the cutting edge) with your finger towards you to carve. If you are left-handed, push it away from you. The scooping knife blades are finished by hand, so the blade shape may vary slightly from one to another.
