What is a High-Speed Steel (HSS) Spoon Carving Knife ?

This is a Japanese-style hook knife capable of working with hard Japanese hardwoods. It is the ideal tool for carving out hollows in spoons, plates, kuksa, and other items. The most distinctive feature of this knife is its blade made of high-speed steel. High-speed steel boasts excellent durability, maintaining its sharpness for extended periods, allowing the blade to bite into and smoothly carve through even hard wood. Through unique sharpening and hardening methods, the material's properties are maximized, resulting in the ultimate "spoon carving knife."

The base metal is made of extremely soft iron, achieving both sharpness and ease of sharpening. Even with hard hardwoods, the blade bites firmly, enabling efficient carving.

The handle is made of high-grade natural cherry wood, featuring a rounded shape for easy handling and a comfortable fit in the hand even during long hours of work.

The blades of spoon carving knives are completely hand-finished, so their shapes may vary slightly from one to another. This is a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship, making each tool unique.

Blade Shapes for Various Applications

You can choose from two shapes: shallow and deep. The shallow type is suitable for carving relatively shallow hollows like those in dishes and plates, while the deep type is ideal for carving deeper hollows such as those in kuksa and bowls. By selecting the optimal shape according to your work and the piece you are creating, you can achieve more efficient and precise carving. Both right-handed and left-handed versions are available for each type, providing a total of four types to handle any task.

How to Use

The basic way to use it, for both left and right hands, is to push the back of the blade (the non-cutting side) with your finger and carve by scooping towards you. This action allows for stable carving. When using it with the opposite hand, push forward and carve by scooping.
The trick to carving is not to carve too deeply at once, but to gradually deepen it to achieve the ideal shape.Wood grain has both "with the grain" and "against the grain," and carving along the "with the grain," where it doesn't catch, produces a clean finish. Excessive load on the blade can lead to damage to both the blade and the handle, which can result in injury.

Japanese High-Speed Steel Spoon Carving Knives Right

Right-Handed Deep / Shallow Type

These are two types optimized for right-handed carving. The shallow type is suitable for carving relatively shallow hollows like those in dishes and plates, while the deep type is ideal for carving deeper hollows such as those in kuksa and bowls. Both types are designed to allow right-handed users to achieve the most natural and stable motion when carving by scooping the blade towards themselves. By selecting the optimal shape according to your work and the piece you are creating, you can achieve more efficient and precise carving.

Japanese High-Speed Steel Spoon Carving Knives Left

Left-Handed Deep / Shallow Type

These are two types optimized for left-handed carving. The shallow type is suitable for carving relatively shallow hollows like those in dishes and plates, while the deep type is ideal for carving deeper hollows such as those in kuksa and bowls. Both types are designed to allow left-handed users to achieve the most natural and stable motion when carving by scooping the blade away from themselves. By selecting the optimal shape according to your work and the piece you are creating, you can achieve more efficient and precise carving.

Popular Woodcraft

Eating delicious food with cutlery you painstakingly made yourself is an unparalleled joy. Once you start, you'll be captivated by its charm and soon want to make pieces for family and friends. Woodcraft is so profound because you can choose your preferred natural wood and shape it to your liking.

Starting with chopsticks, then spoons, plates, and eventually even kuksa (handmade mugs). As your range of creations expands, so does your enjoyment. And for the final finish, oil finish is highly recommended. It not only enhances the beautiful appearance by bringing out the grain vividly but also provides a water-repellent effect. To ensure your handmade creations last, it's important not to skimp on this final step.

Make woodcraft one of your hobbies.
With the Japanese hss spoon carving knife that can carve even hardwoods, we encourage you to try "cutlery making."
